Stars set to support fight against malaria

TORONTO (PGN) >> An already star-studded weekend in and around Toronto just got a little brighter with the announcement of a charity golf tournament and gala dinner on Sept. 7 at the Magna Golf Club.

Golf Rocks will feature Queen Latifah, Alicia Keys, Jennifer Hudson, Colin Farrell, Deborah Harry, Kevin Costner, Bill Maher, Sophia Bush and Gene Simmons. The evening concert, which will also feature a performance by Montreal rockers Mobile and The Canadian Tenors, will be produced by David Foster.

Described as a “rock ‘n’ roll cabaret fundraiser,” Golf Rocks will benefit Spread the Net and Malaria No More – organizations that raise money to buy bed nets that protect impoverished African citizens from malaria.

"Malaria is a brutal killer, claiming more than a million lives every year. Children are especially vulnerable," said co-founder Belinda Stronach, in a release. “But there is a growing campaign to fight this disease. Progress is being made and events like this and the donations of citizens are helping to fuel that progress. Malaria can be prevented and ultimately eradicated with the help of a simple $10 bed net."

Also taking place this weekend: The Toronto International Film Festival, which kicks off Thursday and includes galas with stars like Brad Pitt; the third annual Virgin Festival, featuring Oasis and Foo Fighters; the Canada's Walk of Fame gala with Michael J. Fox, Sigourney Weaver, Linda Evangelista, Bryan Adams and others. the Virgin Unite gala, honouring Kate Hudson and Petra Nemcova; and a number of TIFF-related parties and special events.
