TORONTO (PGN) >> Sir Richard Branson has been formally invited to ring the Peace Bell at the United Nations in New York City next March, popgoesthenews.com has learned.
The chairman of Virgin Group, a longtime environmental crusader, received the invitation tonight from Derek W. Dixon, liaison for the Earth Society Foundation of the United Nations.
Branson, 57, was asked to join other dignitaries on Earth Day (March 20) to ring the Peace Bell in honour of the UN-declared International Earth Year.
He received the invitation at the Direct Energy Centre, where he was hosting a gala in support of the new Canadian division of his charitable foundation, Virgin Unite. Entertainers include Dita Von Teese, Elvis Costello and Criss Angel.
"I humbly invite you to be one of a select few," Dixon wrote in a letter to Branson. Others invited to participate include the Dalai Lama and Al Gore.
It is not yet known if Branson plans to accept the invitation.
